With References you can upload an existing track to ElevenMusic, ElevenCreative or via ElevenAPI and Music v2 will generate a new track that matches its style and feel.

Summary
- References lets you upload an existing track so Music v2 can match its style, instrumentation, and feel.
- You can pair a reference track with a text prompt, or let the reference guide the generation on its own.
- Uploads can range from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
- References is available in ElevenMusic, in ElevenCreative, and via ElevenAPI.
- Every reference track passes a copyright check before generation, so other artist’s work can’t be used as a reference.
How References works
Upload a reference track, and Music v2 uses it to steer the style, instrumentation, and feel of your generation. It's the same creative control a text prompt gives you, anchored to a real sound rather than something you've described.
It's a new input, not a replacement: pair a reference track with a prompt to combine a specific sound with a specific direction, or let the reference do the talking on its own. Uploads can range from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
Also live in ElevenCreative and via ElevenAPI
References isn't limited to ElevenMusic. The same capability is available in ElevenCreative for teams building creative workflows, and via ElevenAPI for developers building music generation directly into their own products.
Protecting artists
Every reference track is checked before generation for matches to recordings owned by others. Tracks that match can’t be used as references. References is designed for music you’ve made yourself.
Who References is for
- Musicians shaping a sound they can already hear but haven't been able to fully describe.
- Teams matching a brand's sonic identity across campaigns, ads, or content.
- Developers building music tools that need real creative precision, not just a prompt box.
