Proving the power of speaking to viewers in their own language
Keeping family connections alive across generations
In April 2023, Della Larsen learned she had ALS, a progressive illness that would gradually take away her ability to speak. With her voice slipping away, Della felt an urgent need to find a way to connect with her future grandchildren—a generation she may never meet but already held close to her heart.
Turning to voice banking technology, Della set out to record herself reading 30 children’s books, preserving her voice for her family. Each book now has a QR code linking to a private recording, allowing her future grandchildren to hear her read as if she were right there with them.
Della’s journey has extended beyond her own family. On social media, she shares her experience with ALS, offering a steady source of hope for others facing similar challenges.
Last month, the ALS Therapy Development Institute recognized Della’s courage and dedication, awarding her the Mary Lou Krauseneck Courage & Love Award. We’re proud to play a part in helping Della communicate daily in her own voice. Accepting the award, Della spoke through a device powered by our voice AI, installed with support from Bridging Voice & The Scott Morgan foundation. Watch her acceptance speech below:
