How ElevenLabs is Preparing for Elections in 2024
Ensuring our systems are developed, deployed, and used safely is our priority
Enhancing AI safety through a focus on content provenance, traceability, and moderation
Alongside ElevenLabs, the panel included leaders from the Alan Turing Institute, the Ada Lovelace Institute, and BT, with MIT Technology Review’s Melissa Heikkilä moderating the discussion.
At ElevenLabs, we develop audio AI technology conscious of its impact. In my role overseeing AI Safety, I’m focused on empowering creators, businesses and users, while preventing misuse and deterring bad actors. During the panel, I outlined the steps we’ve taken to make ElevenLabs a safer, more innovative space, and I advocated for the adoption of strategies that prioritize addressing AI safety challenges. These strategies include:
Traceability: ensures that AI-generated content can be traced back to an individual user. At ElevenLabs, our systems let us link content generated on our platform to the originating account, and our voice cloning tools are accessible only to users who have verified their accounts with banking information. Focus on traceability ensures that anyone using AI platforms can be accountable for their actions, and identified by legal authorities when necessary.
While we prioritize safe AI development, no company can tackle AI misuse alone. At the panel, we recognized the need for widespread collaboration among tech companies, governments, civil rights groups, and the public to confront social and environmental changes and ensure a secure digital future. At ElevenLabs, we’re dedicated to maintaining open dialogue in our community and supporting initiatives like the Content Authenticity Initiative and the Elections Safety Accord to combat misinformation.
At the panel, we all agreed that AI products must be developed and used safely. At the same time we must also allow their creative and unexpected uses. At ElevenLabs, we often see our platform used to improve accessibility of digital content for individuals in need of audio transcriptions, and to give voices back to those who have lost them due to ALS and other health conditions. To make AI applications thrive, it is essential to raise awareness about AI media, encourage critical interaction with digital content, promote tools for verifying authenticity, and educate both the public and institutions on ethical AI usage.
