Codeway is a global consumer app company with more than 500M users worldwide, operating a portfolio of mobile applications across wellness, productivity, and education. One of its flagship apps, Learna, offers an AI-powered, conversational approach to English language learning.
Instead of passive learning methods, Learna users engage in FaceTime-like dialogues with an AI tutor that adapts to their level, interests, and goals. The experience is designed to feel interactive, responsive, and personal.
To build this experience, Codeway integrated ElevenLabs’ Text to Speech to generate expressive, lifelike voices that respond instantly - allowing users to feel as if they’re speaking with a real tutor rather than a scripted system.
To enable real-time conversations, Codeway needed a voice technology that could meet strict requirements for naturalness, multilingual quality, and latency.
During the research phase, the team assessed several providers against these criteria. ElevenLabs stood out for consistent voice quality across languages and strong real-time responsiveness.
To validate these findings, Codeway ran an A/B test in a live production environment, comparing its legacy Text to Speech system with ElevenLabs. This made it possible to measure how voice quality affected user engagement and business outcomes such as conversion and lifetime value (LTV.)
From a technical standpoint, the integration process was straightforward. The SDK and documentation were clear, and the developer experience was described as “clean and well-structured.” The team completed the integration without major challenges and moved quickly into testing.
