# Your receptionist

Your AI receptionist is a voice agent that answers inbound phone calls on behalf of your business. It speaks naturally, understands context, and can perform actions like booking appointments, transferring calls, and taking messages.

## What your receptionist can do

* **Answer calls** — Picks up every call with a personalized greeting
* **Book appointments** — Checks availability and schedules directly
* **Answer questions** — Uses your knowledge base to respond accurately
* **Take messages** — Records caller messages with priority levels
* **Transfer calls** — Routes calls to the right person based on rules
* **Speak multiple languages** — Detects caller language and switches automatically
* **Collect information** — Gathers caller details and creates client records

## How it works

When a call comes in:

1. The receptionist greets the caller with your configured first message
2. It listens and understands the caller's intent
3. Based on your rules and knowledge base, it responds appropriately
4. If the caller wants to book, it checks your calendar and offers available slots
5. If it cannot answer a question, it logs a knowledge gap for you to review

## Multiple receptionists

On higher-tier plans, you can create multiple receptionists — each with a different voice, set of rules, and phone number. This is useful for:

* Separating departments (sales vs. support)
* Serving multiple locations with location-specific knowledge
* Routing by language or time of day (e.g., an after-hours agent with different rules)

## Active and inactive states

You can activate or deactivate any receptionist at any time:

* **Active** — Answering calls on its assigned phone number
* **Inactive** — Not answering calls; phone number is still reserved

Deactivating your only receptionist means calls to your number will go unanswered.
