# File uploads

Upload files to give your receptionist information that isn't on your website: internal policies, detailed service guides, product catalogs, and more.

## Supported files

| Format   | Extension |
| -------- | --------- |
| PDF      | `.pdf`    |
| Word     | `.docx`   |
| Text     | `.txt`    |
| HTML     | `.html`   |
| Markdown | `.md`     |
| EPUB     | `.epub`   |

Files can be up to 20 MB. Upload one file at a time by dragging it onto the Knowledge Sources tab or selecting **Add new** → **Upload file**. Legacy `.doc` files are not supported.

## How files are processed

Once processed, the file's content is indexed and searchable by your receptionist during calls. Reception.ai also extracts business details, such as services, staff, or products, that you can [import](/docs/reception-ai/knowledge-base/overview#importing-business-details).

To process a file again, select **Reprocess**. You don't need to upload it again.

## When to use file uploads

* **Internal policies**: cancellation rules, refund terms, privacy policies.
* **Service guides**: preparation instructions for clients.
* **Product catalogs**: specifications and availability not on your website.
* **Scripts**: talking points for common scenarios.

Each uploaded file counts as one knowledge source toward your plan limit.
